The new capital of the Roman Empire established by Emperor Jesus Constantine was 1,000 miles (1610 km) east of the imperial city. That location was the previous domain of the Empire of Alexander the Great and the lingua franca was Greek.

Constantinople became the new capital of the Roman Empire.

Prior to 685, all Papal appointments had to be ratified by the Emperor in Constantinople. The pontiffs kept reminding the Emperors that they were the only legitimate Roman Emperors; they lived in the imperial city, and they alone had the keys of Romulus and Remus, aka Saints Peter and Paul. When Charlemagne was crowned "Holy Roman Emperor " by Pope Leo III, he was forbidden to establish his HQ in the city of the Caesars.

The Palace of Charlemagne in Aachen, Germany, was Charlemagne's HQ.

Not one of the so-called "Holy Roman Emperors" that followed Charlemagne was ever allowed to reign in the rooster city!
